6 ways in which working for a startup could be your dream job

So you’re a scientist thinking of making the jump to work for a biotech or healthcare startup company? It’s a great idea, considering more than 260,000 people in the UK have launched  a startup since the beginning of this year alone. You’re here at Golgi, meaning you’ve already taken the first steps towards a startup career, but is it really for you? Here are 6 ways in which working for a startup could be your dream job.


1. Expedite your professional and personal development

We know that biotech and healthcare startups are about more than the science. Unlike many narrow industrial positions, a job with a startup company can be much more flexible, and the limited number of team members means that you will often need to take on multiple roles. Not only does this mean you get the opportunity to widen your experiences, but you will acquire the associated skills along the way. Startups are always on the lookout for dynamic and malleable people, so if this sounds like you, a job in a startup could be perfect.


2. Create your own role

In addition to being able to expand your experiences in a startup company, you can also choose the direction in which these experiences travel. Biotech and healthcare startups cover many areas, from research & development to business, marketing to finance. Change and new initiatives in large companies often comes slowly and trickles down from the top. In startups, open-mindedness and creativity in employees is highly valued. One of the noticeable things about startups is that the initial workforce is relatively small. If you start working for a startup at this early stage in its development, not only do you get the chance to watch the company grow, but you grow with it. Often, you’ll get the chance to employ others and take on more senior roles as the company expands. So if you’re ambitious in your career goals and are prepared to take on more authoritative and conscientious roles, you’ll likely be a promising candidate for a job in a biotech and healthcare startup.

Whether it’s investigative science, creative marketing, or cutting-edge technology that really floats your boat, you just can’t beat a startup.
